Our friend Andrew hit the nail on the head in a recent comment:

Evil people do seem to take themselves seriously. Those in the great spacious building can’t laugh at themselves.

Mocking laughter, pointing outward, is what keeps the whole enterprise going. If we at the tree ever stopped listening to them and streaming their way, the whole thing would fall apart. The Great and Spacious Building lacks its own foundation.

At the end of days, the gates of the devil’s kingdom will be shut and Satan will be bound. In a sense, this happens automatically as a natural consequence of the end of the world. Simply by shutting down the new supply of folks to be tempted and attacked. Then the inhabitants of that proud tower will have nothing left to do but to turn on each other, creating a new “outside” of each other at which to point and mock. This process we call “hell.”
