In an article in the New York Times titled Bleeding Heart Tightwads, columnist Nicholas D. Kristof says that while liberals show tremendous compassion in pushing for generous government spending to help the neediest people at home and abroad, conservatives give far more in individual contributions to charitable causes.


  • One study shows that households headed by conservatives give 30% more to charity than households headed by liberals.

  • Another study shows that the average annual contributions by conservatives were almost double those of liberals. Even when you exclude donations to religious organizations, conservatives are still more generous than liberals.

  • Red states (Republican voting states) are the most likely to give to nonprofits, while Northeastern states (Democrat voting states) are least likely to do so.

Jimmy Smith reports that 8 of the top 10 states in volunteerism are traditional Republican states.
