Steven Knudsen just posted some common-sense ideas on his profile on Plaxo. Here are summaries of three good ones:

#1. Prohibit politicians from remaining in office for decades, which creates a special politician class of people who live outside of normal life and above the law. Limit federal officials to a maximum 3 terms in any congressional office and a maximum total of 16 years contiguous service in a federal office. Then for 10 years, they can't hold any city, county, community, state or federal office, civil service employment, or appointment.

#2. Modify the 14th amendment to the U.S. constitution to remove the word "born" so that we don't encourage pregnant mothers to sneak into the country to give birth or encourage illegal residents to have children so that they have a justification to remain in the country illegally to care for the "legal" child. Legal residency and protection, and bennefits should be granted to the children of legal residents. Full citizenship should be granted along with the right to vote, af the age 18, but only after the successful completion of an English language test, citizenship certification of some sort, and taking the oath of citizenship.

#3. Employers should have their employee roles auditied for illegal workers with increasing penalties over the course of a decade. Over time, there will be far fewer opportunities for illegal residents to find work, thus reducing the motivation to enter the country illegally. Those found in the country illegally after this decade of transition should be severly punished by fine, incarseration, and deportation depending on the extent of their illegal activities, such as fraud, tax evasion, identy theft, receipt of government benefits, etc.
