When The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announced its new youth theme for 2021, I wept. It came on a day when I was feeling weary. I feel like God reached out and spoke to me in that moment.

“Wherefore, be not weary in well-doing, for ye are laying the foundation of a great work. And out of small things proceedeth that which is great. Behold, the Lord requireth the heart and a willing mind.” Doctrine and Covenants 64:33-34 (If this book of scripture is unfamiliar to you, you can read more about the Doctrine and Covenants. Or for a different flavor, you can listen to Saints Unscripted share some of their favorite scriptures from the Doctrine and Covenants.)

There were so many things about this scripture that stood out to me. I needed to be reminded that even though things around me may be in commotion, there is always good work to be done. That work can include work inside myself, building faith and finding healing and strength from God; work outside myself, including service to my family, friends, and others God may put into my path; and work helping build the kingdom of God by sharing my faith and sharing about the Restoration of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

I was reminded that God is there when I’m feeling weary. He cares. I’m not supposed to be able to do all the things alone. All I need to do is the next right thing, the small and simple things of each day, and as I do that, He’ll “lead me along (see Doctrine and Covenants 78:17-20).”

I was reminded that God knows my heart. That He doesn’t expect me to be able to do all things perfectly, or to have all the answers for myself or anyone or anything else. What He’s looking for is my heart and my willingness to be open to His guidance and moldable in His loving care.
