Alma’s questions to his son Helaman do not seem simply to be questions of faith, but they seem to be part of a covenant making ceremony whereby Helaman was appointed to the position of record keeper. The repetitious nature of the questions and the blessing conveyed at the end suggest perhaps a public ceremony rather than a private conversation. It is clear from his earlier letters that Alma was well aware of his son’s faith. But this ceremony likely was not solely for his own edification, but also for public consumption.’
