In desperation, Limhi sent a group of men out to search for the Land of Zarahemla to plead for redemption.  Limhi must have hoped that this journey would lead to the delivery of his people. But the Lord had other plans.

Instead of leading them to Zarahemla, he led them to the land of the Jaredites and helped them find the record. And he did so at a time when he knew there was a seer among the Nephites so that the records could be translated. Had they not been found at this time, they may have been lost or even destroyed in the future wars and commotions.

The rescue that Limhi desperately wanted came in due time. But meanwhile, the Lord consecrated the efforts of the people of Limhi for the good of his people. Those records would provide instruction and warning for generations and would be particularly valuable to us in our day.

When we don’t understand why the Lord denies us a desired blessing at the moment, we should consider how else the Lord can use us at that time. We should try to discover how we can be instruments in his hands. Promised blessings always come eventually, but not always without some divinely inspired detours.

7 And the king said unto him: Being grieved for the afflictions of my people, I caused that forty and three of my people should take a journey into the wilderness, that thereby they might find the land of Zarahemla, that we might appeal unto our brethren to deliver us out of bondage.
8 And they were lost in the wilderness for the space of many days, yet they were diligent, and found not the land of Zarahemla but returned to this land, having traveled in a land among many waters, having discovered a land which was covered with bones of men, and of beasts, and was also covered with ruins of buildings of every kind, having discovered a land which had been peopled with a people who were as numerous as the hosts of Israel.
