A judge overturned Proposition 8 in California which had explicitly defined marriage as between a man and a woman. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints issued a statement about this ruling today, saying it “regrets this decision. California voters have twice been given the opportunity to vote on the definition of marriage in their state and both times have determined that marriage should be recognized as only between a man and a woman. We agree.  Marriage between a man and a woman is the bedrock of society.”

The statement concluded with a reminder to maintain civil discourse on this divisive issue, which is a message we have heard numerous times, both specifically about the gay marriage issue and also in general.
