Readers of this blog will not be surprised by my selection for this month’s Charity of the Month. Mothers Without Borders (it’s for men, too!) is an organization I’m very involved with, serving a cause I believe to be inspired and inspiring.

Kathy Headlee founded the organization in 2000 after spending several years working with orphans around the world. Now, MWB has programs running in Romania, Mexico, Guatemala, Ecuador, Nepal, Bolivia, Zambia, and other countries.

The statistics regarding the orphan crisis are staggering. Consider:

  • More than 36 million children under 15 are orphaned in Sub-Saharan Africa today.
  • Every 14 seconds, a child is orphaned as a result of AIDS.
  • It is feared that there may be more than 80 million orphans in India and Asia

Clearly there is a need for mothers (without borders) and caring individuals around the world to step in and help out. MWB provides a vehicle whereby interested individuals can donate, sponsor a child, serve in Africa and elsewhere, help raise funds through craft boutiques, and help out in numerous ways. Each individual’s talents vary, and MWB can use them all.

Here’s an eight minute video segment highlighting MWB and its work in Zambia:
