28 Now, we will compare the word unto a seed. Now, if ye give place, that a seed may be planted in your heart, behold, if it be a true seed, or a good seed, if ye do not cast it out by your unbelief, that ye will resist the Spirit of the Lord, behold, it will begin to swell within your breasts; and when you feel these swelling motions, ye will begin to say within yourselves–It must needs be that this is a good seed, or that the word is good, for it beginneth to enlarge my soul; yea, it beginneth to enlighten my understanding, yea, it beginneth to be delicious to me.29 Now behold, would not this increase your faith? I say unto you, Yea; nevertheless it hath not grown up to a perfect knowledge.
I always loved teaching these verses as a missionary because they describe so perfectly the process of developing faith. The first growth of faith is like a swelling of the breast. It is faint and not so clear. Yet if you observe it and begin to focus on it, you can come to increase your faith on a particular thing and it can become perfect faith.
I’ve heard so many say that this process is subjective and unreliable. Yet, for those that experience it, this feeling is real and it is certain. Gospel knowledge comes with a certainty that one cannot match anywhere else. One truly can know and then that knowledge and faith can increase. And eventually that faith can bring forth incredible fruit if cultivated.
