“We Live Here”

Here at Segullah, we are big fans of the work of Annie Blake. We love her strong lines, bold use of color (that gold!), and her interpretations of domestic and natural elements. I first became acquainted with Annie’s work when she painted a picture of Mount Timpanogos every day for at least a month, and I was fascinated with how different each painting looked. It takes an artist’s eye to notice and accentuate the slight variations in the scenes right outside our front doors.

Annie says, “My work deals with the layers that build our existence and with human connectedness– the complex inner lives that appear so similar from the outside. I contemplate ideas of growth and the things we have to/get to leave out in life. I explore the human experience, using the house as a symbol of complex inner lives and the variety of paths to build or follow, the limitations we allow or break through. The neighborhood, for me, represents our proximity but lack of knowledge of each other’s hidden color and mess, and I paint communities to encourage consideration of our dependence on each other and the beauty in our diverse yet shared experiences.”

Annie’s Bio: After growing up all over (Kansas, Virginia, Minnesota, England, Brazil), I now unexpectedly but happily reside in Utah with my husband (we are both the oldest of large families–it made me bossy, and it made him a peacemaker) and my daughter and son.
