5 Wherefore, the Lord hath commanded me to make these plates for a wise purpose in him, which purpose I know not.
6 But the Lord knoweth all things from the beginning; wherefore, he prepareth a way to accomplish all his works among the children of men; for behold, he hath all power unto the fulfilling of all his words. And thus it is. Amen.

Nephi has been very wise and effective in how h has arranged his narrative. At the start, he explained that his work would show how the Lord’s tender mercies are shown to those chosen. Then followed the narrative involving the brass plates which showed this principle in action. Now, he returns to this theme having established its validity in practice in order to convince the reader of the inspired nature of his writing.

We have been predisposed by the story to agree with Nephi that God “prepareth a way to accomplish all his works among the children of men.” We saw this power in work with the miraculous deliverance of the plates. Thus, we are able to take on faith Nephi’s promise that his writing a second set of plates was for a wise purpose and will be used by God for good. He has effectively proven this statement even before he made it.

His attitude is useful for us as well. When God asks something strange or unexpected from us, we can like Nephi think back on the times that we have been delivered or seen the Lord magnify our efforts. We can then take confidence that God will continue to do so. We can also look to the stories in the scriptures to take courage and know that God will not fail us.
