Before we die

 

when we’re on our way out

it should show

like orange, burnt sienna,

like cascades of red leaves

shivering and brisk

 

and then each glance in our direction

between the bodega and the bar

is envy for all that color

pity for our diminishing

awe for our bright glory

 

something, anything more

than the way eyes divert

like river around a rock

tumbling and cold,

purposeful.
