Yesterday, for our Fourth of July celebration, my wife and I decided to have grilled Filet Mignon. As I have never cooked one before I knew this was going to be a challenge that I would have to take on - and of course can tie some gospel parallels to this experience. :)

The Filet Mignon is considered to be one of the choicest cuts of meat available. And, the end result can either be a great success or a complete failure. Since I have no experience with cooking these, I turned to the Internet for some further help. Here is a list of common do's and don'ts for best results with Filet Mignon:
  • Allow the steak to sit at room temperature
  • Add NO salt as this tends to pull moisture out of the steak rendering it dry.
  • Make sure that when you place it on the grill, the temperature is set to high. The purpose is to sear the meat.
  • Do not leave the steak unattended for a long time.
  • Do not puncture the meat with any objects such as temperature gages or forks as this will pull the juices out of the steak rendering it dry once again.
  • Knowing how to tell the amount of doneness by touching the steak is the proper way of telling what temperature the steak is.
  • After pulling the steak off the grill, allow it to rest for at least 5 minutes. This will allow it to continue to cook a bit longer.
So now that I have given you the culinary list of how to properly cook the Filet Mignon, how can we possibly tie in some gospel truths and parallels?

We are choice spirits of our Heavenly Father. We have been saved for these times because of how valiant we were in the spirit world. We were fierce defenders for the right. And now we are placed on the earth at this time armed with the tools to be able to withstand the enemy. It is us; whether we are earthly parents of the noble birthright or the children who have proven ourselves to be steadfast.

Satan and his followers know this fact too. With all the earthly enticements placed before us, we are literally placed in the refiners fire. His desire for us is to be one a total failure. As we are subjected to all the buffetings, temptations, and challenges in life, AND overcome them, we develop armour which will help keep those forces at bay. We guard against evil pokes and prods which can damage our armour, making us more susceptible for even greater damage. We guard against anything that can destroy us, whether by addictions, or even small insignificant things that can wear down our armor. Specifically, things such as the Internet, music, suggestive materials - in short, anything that will drive the Spirit away from us.

We, as parents of the noble youth must keep vigil too. There are many "handbooks" available for raising children, but I submit that our children did nit come to this earth with an "owners manual". we, as arents try the best to raise our children . Each child is inherently different from another one with their individual tendencies. So there is not a "one manual for every child". The only manuals we have in that are somewhat constant are the manuals of prayer, longsuffering, and inspiration of the Holy Ghost.  We, who are "seasoned" and have developed our own armor must take watch of our children as they grow up. And even when they are grown up, we still maintain a vigil watch for them. We use tools such as prayer and fasting. We may, from time to time need to impart of our substance to help them. We, as parents can see the progress of our children, not by prodding into their lives, but by gentleness, meekness, love unfeigned.

We know that exterior looks should not be the end-all judgement on a person. It is what as developed on the inside that is most important. The fruits of our labors in this life are:
  • Our testimonies of the gospel
  • Our personal relationship with our Savior, Jesus Christ.
  • The light of Christ within us
  • Our willingness to share of our substance
And, if we strive to do all these things, we will hear the sweet words of our Heavenly Father, "...enter thou into the joy of My rest".
