After spying this tempting pie on Instagram, I begged my friend for the recipe. But when she sent the list of ingredients over, I thought, “This can’t possibly be right! It needs something else– cream of tartar or gelatin, more cream.”

My sister had the same reaction, “Are you sure this will work?”

But it does! Place raspberries, sugar, two egg whites in the bottom of the mixing bowl, add time and soon you’ll have a magnificent raspberry fluff. Well, OK, there are a few more steps…but this is a great time of year for Mile High Raspberry Pie.  Perhaps a better example is my famous hot fudge sauce: boil heavy cream, add brown sugar then melt in chocolate (chips or chopped bittersweet). Every time I share this recipe, I get an argument, “But what are the exact amounts? (start with one cup of each)” “But it needs sweetened condensed milk.” “What about cornstarch?” Most people won’t ever try the recipe because it seems too basic. But magnificent fudge sauce doesn’t need anything more, if you’re brave enough to try the simple combination of cream, sugar and chocolate you’ll find it works every time.

The basics of the gospel are the same, pray, study the scriptures, partake of the Atonement, seek the Spirit, serve others, add time. Over and over we repeat the same Sunday School answers, but the recipe seems almost too simple to believe.

Many times, in the midst of a struggle I find myself searching for a secret ingredient, a special way of mixing to solve my problems. But if I’m honest with myself, I usually find I’m neglecting one of the basics.

Forgive me, my analogy falls apart pretty quickly upon examination. But the central truth holds firm: seek simplicity, seek God, add time.

How has your life been blessed by simplicity?
