I’ve always joked that one of my talents is sleeping. I can fall asleep at any time, any place as long as I’ve got a decent pillow. Until lately that is. My long hair has been wrapping around my neck at night and making me sweat up a storm now that our Texas temperatures have been back in the 90s. A few weeks ago I tried piling my hair up on my head at bedtime and it’s made a huge difference. So much so that I made sure I brought some extra elastics when I went out of town with my husband for the weekend. I also brought my pillow from home because sometimes hotel pillows just aren’t fluffy enough. Flat pillows make me toss and turn a little.
My husband teased me as we backed out of the driveway. “If you start doing any more weird stuff at bedtime, you’re going to be just like your mother.” My mother has undoubtedly the most complicated and absurd bedtime requirements. Mouth guards, denture cream (not used for dentures!), face masks and large pieces of foam placed in strange configurations are involved. Please don’t ask for details because it is nearly too much to handle. Just believe me that when my husband said those words, my blood ran icy for a minute.
It’s not true, though. It’s only a rubber band and a pillow. “I’m not like my mother at all”, I thought that as I looked down at my very brightly colored shirt.
My mother wears a very brightly colored shirt every single day.
I am becoming my mother.
When we have that realization, why it is usually accompanied by a wail? Are we alarmed because it’s always the odd things about our mothers that we end up doing? Or are we just upset about getting older in general, and our mothers will always be older than we are?
I can’t recall any woman saying–with a big smile on her face–“I’m turning out just like my mother!”
As Mother’s Day approaches, what are you feeling about becoming more like your mother? Are you noticing it happening? Are you pleased? Terrified? Do you think we have no choice but to become more like our mothers?
