A new Web site has been created by the The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to connect members and friends of the LDS Church with volunteer service opportunities.

Simply Serving (serve.lds.org) establishes a worldwide community as a resource for completing significant amounts of important Church-related projects in a short period of time. These projects would take many years to complete without the help of individuals joining together as unified groups. As an online hub for posting projects, the Simply Serving Web site will become a portal for anyone who has a willingness and desire to serve…and help in building the Kingdom of God.

For example, as a step in upgrading the Gospel Library (gospellibrary.lds.org), thousands of Church documents need to be reviewed and enriched. Now that the magazines and manuals have been converted to XML, the Church needs people to review the text against a PDF copy of the publication to ensure that the conversion was clean and complete. You could also volunteer to review the text and insert page breaks to match the printed publication. Future tasks will likely include adding subject tags to articles and chapters of publications to improve the searchability of these documents.

This method of involving a community in accomplishing tasks is called crowdsourcing. You may recall my article two months ago about Community-Sourced Translation.

It is exciting to belong to a Church where we are not just passive members, but can be active in contributing to a great cause!
