I’m looking forward to this Conference. Probably one of the most interesting things that we’ll probably see this morning is the selection of the newest apostle to the Quorum of the Twelve.
9:51
[Comment From Tim Malone ]
Good Morning Bryce. Thanks for providing this service!
9:52
Good Morning! You’re very welcome. I hope it is helpful, and adds to the experience.
9:53
The new apostle will replace the vacancy left by the passing of Elder Joseph B. Wirthlin on December 1, 2008, at age 91
9:55
First Presidency entering the Conference Center auditorium
9:56
I love the respect we give General Authorities by standing when they enter a room.
9:57
The most poignant experience I had doing that was on my mission in El Salvador when Elder Nelson visited. We were in a small room in an institute building, and all the missionaries stood as he came in. It was a powerful experience, and the Spirit could be felt strongly.
9:59
3 minutes to start
10:01
Looks like President Monson is wearing a grayish color suit. That’s interesting.
10:02
It appears that the internet video broadcast on the left is about 1 minute behind the TV broadcast. FYI.
10:03
The choir is singing Press Forward Saints
10:04

1. Press forward, Saints, with steadfast faith in Christ,
With hope’s bright flame alight in heart and mind,
With love of God and love of all mankind.

[Chorus]
Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

2. Press forward, feasting on the word of Christ.
Receive his name, rejoicing in his might.
Come unto God; find everlasting light.

3. Press on, enduring in the ways of Christ.
His love proclaim thru days of mortal strife.
Thus saith our God: “Ye have eternal life!”

10:06
Elder Didier gives the invocation
10:06
President Monson will give the opening address
10:07
notes the absence of Elder Wirthlin who has passed since the last Conference.. no doubt that he is carrying on the work on the other side
10:07
the vacancy in the Twelve is going to be filled by Elder Neil L. Anderson
10:08
sustaining vote
10:09
he’s been a member of the Presidency of the Seventy since 2005
10:09
President Monson talks of his visit to the Mexico City Temple rededication, and the activities he participated in there
10:10
365,000 members at the rededication of the temple
10:10
many more dedications of temples in the months and years ahead
10:11
The Church is doing very well.. the work moves forward uninterrupted
10:12
missionary work goes on throughout the world…
10:12
Perpetual Education Fund continues to move forward… 35,600 have enrolled in the program and have improved their skills… 18,900 have finished their education… they have increased their income 3-4 times
10:13
an inspired program
10:13
thanks to the members who love one another and work together
10:14
we’re anxious to listen to the messages we’ll listen to over the next 2 days.. a renewed determination to live the gospel and serve the Lord
10:14
the speakers select their own messages to share.
10:15
adds in remembrance of President Hinckley.. he’s sure he is serving well on the other side
10:15
Israel, Israel, God is Calling by the choir
10:16
Israel, Israel, God is calling,
Calling thee from lands of woe.
Babylon the great is falling;
God shall all her tow’rs o’erthrow.
Come to Zion, come to Zion
Ere his floods of anger flow.
Come to Zion, come to Zion
Ere his floods of anger flow.

Israel, Israel, God is speaking.
Hear your great Deliv’rer’s voice!
Now a glorious morn is breaking
For the people of his choice.
Come to Zion, come to Zion,
And within her walls rejoice.
Come to Zion, come to Zion,
And within her walls rejoice.

Israel, angels are descending
From celestial worlds on high,
And to man their pow’r extending,
That the Saints may homeward fly.
Come to Zion, come to Zion,
For your coming Lord is nigh.
Come to Zion, come to Zion,
For your coming Lord is nigh.

Israel! Israel! Canst thou linger
Still in error’s gloomy ways?
Mark how judgment’s pointing finger
Justifies no vain delays.
Come to Zion, come to Zion!
Zion’s walls shall ring with praise.
Come to Zion, come to Zion!
Zion’s walls shall ring with praise.

10:17
byuidaho notes on Twitter that Elder Andersen is scheduled to speak the commencement there next week
10:18
beautiful song by the choir!
10:19
#ldsconf is one of the highest trending topics on Twitter right now.
10:20
Elder Hales… come to Zion!
10:20
[Comment From Sylvia]
I enjoy your notes and comentary
10:20
thanks Sylvia!
10:21
President Monson looked after 84 widows from the ward over which he was bishop until they passed away… we’re grateful to have his example… thank you President Monson
10:22
economic uncertainty right now… what we learn now can bless us and our posterity in generations to come… speaking about choices today.. debt, addictions
10:23
debt is incurred when we can’t control our wants and addictive impulses
10:23
the doctrines of the restored gospel can help us overcome these challenges
10:24
through the Savior any experience can be for our good, and can strengthen us
10:24
the adversary knows how, where, and when to tempt us.. but if we have the Spirit we can be aware of these times, and say “Get thee behind me Satan!”
10:25
what is a provident provider? all of us are responsible to provide for our families in temporal and spiritual ways.. provident living = joyful living within our means, avoiding debt, saving for rainy days and emergencies, providing for needs
10:25
thou shalt not covet!
10:26
our world is fraught with feelings of entitlement.. keeping up with the Joneses
10:26
we go into debt for things we do not really need
10:27
if we are encumbered by debt we can’t focus on our real needs..
10:27
2 lessons in provident living..
10:28
1st – saw a beautiful dress in a store window for his wife.. if she liked it, we’d buy it.. she said, “it was a beautiful dress, but we can’t afford it.”
10:28
2nd – wanted to buy a fancy coat for his wife… she replied “where would I wear it?”
10:29
[Comment From Brad]
wikipedia entry for Elder Andersen was updated within seconds of his call!
10:29
“are you buying this for me, or for you?”
10:29
[Comment From Brad]
the LDS know how to use technology!
10:29
are you truly buying this for for me?
10:30
money would be better spent saving for education funds and paying down the mortgage… we need to say, “we cannot afford it, even though we want it.” or “we can afford it, but we don’t really need it, and we don’t really want it.”
10:31
foundation of provident living is the law of the tithe
10:31
no matter how well we are, or how poor, we all pay 10% of our income
10:31
fast offerings are also important.. at least the cost of 2 consecutive meals.
10:32
another way.. establish a family budget.. review income, spending, and saving with the family
10:32
set goals for vacations or purchases
10:33
no need to satisfy every immediate want…. whenever we need to possess something, “is this benefit temporary, or will it have eternal value and significance?”
10:33
an addiction is a craving of the natural man.. it is insatiable as an appetite
10:33
our deepest hunger should be what only the Lord can provide.. his love, confidence, hope
10:34
we must want more than anything else to do our Heavenly Father’s will.. “I will give away all my sins to know thee”
10:35
through these things we’ll feel His love in our lives, and have the Spirit… we will be able to change our addictive behavior… I invite you to come unto Him.. “wherefore, do not spend money for that which is of no worth, or that which does not satisfy”
10:36
the Lord has overcome all things.. may we also overcome worldly things by coming unto Him
10:36
great talk by Elder Hales
10:36
Sister Margaret S. Lifferth.. First counselor in Primary General Presidency
10:36
feed my lambs, feed my sheep
10:37
instill a love of God, and a testimony of His gospel.. to be able to do this we must cultivate respect for each other and reverence for God
10:37
teach respect and reverence that will strengthen our children and youth
10:38
am I an example of respect in my home?
10:38
do I show respect for the property of others? How do I show my respect for others with which I disagree?
10:39
respect for others and reverence for God are related.
10:39
reverence is not a natural tendency of children.. it must be taught.. and it must be rooted in love
10:40
[Comment From Samuel]
Thanks for typing all this!
10:40
You are welcome, Samuel. Thanks for being here.
10:40
we teach line upon line, precept upon precept
10:41
[Comment From Brad]
thanks for setting up this page bro
10:41
Smile no prob.
10:41
[Comment From Brad]
I think it is really cool how many people on the lds hash tag on twitter are openly andunabashedly announcing they are mormon to all their followers!
10:42
we exemplify reverence when we pray appropriately, teach from the scriptures, show respect for General Authorities and other leaders
10:43
we must set the example for respect and reverence in our church meetings
10:43
many ways in which we can show reverence in sacrament meeting
10:44
[Comment From brandt]
My parent’s generation did General Conference packets, I check the liveblog comments on BCC/T&S and now CoverItLive with you Bryce…thanks dude
10:44
you’re welcome brandt
10:44
ideas for respect and reverence for teachers… love those in your class
10:44
be prepared
10:45
a well-prepared lesson in which the students participate can do a lot for reverence
10:45
take concerns for reverence to ward leadership
10:46
I believe the promises of a prophet
10:46
great talk about respect and reverence… needed in these times
10:47
Michael A. Neider, second counselor young men general presidency
10:47
as the priesthood, we should see that the sisters are not the only examples of virtue.
10:48
quorum principles, and Aaronic priesthood
10:48
principle of study, obtain God’s word
10:48
regularly study scripture, and other good books
10:49
the work of the quorum is to increase faith in Christ
10:49
the teaching of fundamentals is urgent.
10:49
priesthood leaders must do their homework
10:51
invite the use of inspired questions to quorums… what does an aaronic quorum president do to preside over his quorum?
10:51
as you study the handbooks, more questions will come into your hearts..
10:52
be sure to regularly use the Church handbooks
10:52
#ldsconf is the #1 trending topic on Twitter right now.. I suppose that this will likely be the case all weekend. I wonder what the Twitterverse is thinking.. Smile
10:55
an example of a quorum president, and his influence on his quorum
10:56
young brothers and sisters, you are powerful tools in the Savior’s hands!
10:57
this is a great talk for quorum presidencies
10:57
President Monson back at the podium… “we’ve been spiritually feed”
10:58
Now Let Us Rejoice by the choir and congregation
10:58

1. Now let us rejoice in the day of salvation,
No longer as strangers on earth need we roam;
Good tidings are sounding to us and each nation,
And shortly the hour of redemption will come.

2. When all that was promised the saints will be given,
And none will molest them from morn until ev’n,
And earth will appear as the garden of Eden,
And Jesus will say to all Israel: Come home!

3. We’ll love one another and never dissemble,
But cease to do evil and ever be one;
And while the ungodly are fearing and tremble,
We’ll watch for the day when the Savior shall come:

4. When all that was promised the saints will be given,
And none will molest them from morn until ev’n,
And earth will appear as the garden of Eden,
And Jesus will say to all Israel: Come home!

5. In faith we’ll rely on the arm of Jehovah,
To guide through these last days of trouble and gloom;
And after the scourges and harvest are over,
We’ll rise with the just, when the Savior doth come:

6. Then all that was promised the saints will be given,
And they will be crowned as the angels of heav’n;
And earth will appear as the garden of Eden,
And Christ and his people will ever be one.

11:01
Allan F. Packer of the Seventy to address us
11:01
[Comment From Brad]
conference is #1 on twitter trending now…
11:01
these are the best of times, these are the worst of times…
11:02
we can build on bedrock, by building on the foundation of the Lord Jesus Christ.. we must know for ourselves… God the Father is the father of our spirits and loves us, Jesus Christ is our Redeemer and Savior, Holy ghost is the Spirit which reveals truth to our minds
11:03
a story of his youth
11:04
trusted his coach.. I knew what he taught, worked
11:04
we must practice gospel principles and listening to the Spirit so that they become natural and automatic
11:04
testimony = a personal witness borne to our souls by the Holy ghost that certain facts of eternal significance are true and that we know them to be true
11:05
1. we must have the desire
11:05
2. experiment on the word.. Alma 32
11:06
3. study to learn.. pondering
11:06
“study it out in your mind, and then ask if it be right”
11:06
answers come in a still small voice.. burning within the bosom
11:07
Joseph Smith – when we feel pure intelligence flowing into you, strokes of ideas.. those things are by the Spirit of God.. this is the principle of revelation
11:07
this is how we gain testimonies and receive revelation in the future
11:08
some people feel like they need to experience visions like Joseph Smith before we can have testimonies.. but the Spirit works in diverse ways
11:09
ask for a testimony of truth… prayer.. ask the question in our minds.. “ask, and it shall be given you, seek, and ye shall find, knock, and it shall be opened unto you”
11:09
if any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself
11:09
by the power of the Holy Ghost, we may know the truth of all things
11:09
this witness is available to ALL
11:10
such a witness and testimony will be necessary in the coming days
11:10
[Comment From Guest]
THANX!!
11:11
Allan Packer is the oldest of 5 sons of President Boyd K. Packer
11:11
Elder Christofferson of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles
11:11
welcomes Elder Andersen to the quorum
11:12
tells of an earthquake in a foreign country, and the experiences of the Conde family
11:13
but your smiling.. “we’ve prayed, and we’re at peace… we can build again with the Lord’s help”
11:13
spiritual strength is repeated around the world… it is a simple illustration of a profound power, which will become increasingly important in the days ahead.. we need strong Christians!
11:14
covenants
11:15
our foundational covenant is baptism, wherein we take upon us the name of Christ.. we become part of the covenant people of the Lord, and heirs of the Celestial Kingdom of God
11:15
more covenants are made in the temple.. we become heirs of exaltation in the Celestial Kingdom
11:15
the new and everlasting covenant = the gospel of Jesus Christ
11:16
for God so loved the word that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever would believe in Him would not perish but have everlasting life
11:16
repent, be baptized, be sanctified by the holy ghost
11:16
what is it about the gospel that allows us to smile in hardship?
11:17
1st – as we walk in obedience, we enjoy a continual flow of blessings based upon the covenant.. we can act, not simply be acted upon
11:17
obedience gives us greater control over our lives.. to live, and go, and creat
11:17
in the covenant path, we find gifts and help
11:18
we are part of a covenant people, a community of Saints
11:19
the gospel produces the faith in order to persevere in tough times
11:19
we can face life with hope, we will succeed in the end, and we have a promise of God, by name, and He cannot lie
11:20
the early Saints even suffered death, but they knew they had a hope, eternal in the heavens.. whatever God requires of us, we know that it is right.. we have the assurance that every afflliction will be turned to our gain
11:21
we rejoice that we suffer shame for Christ’s name
11:21
D&C 97:8-9
11:21
we gain greater faith through trials
11:22
we receive divine power through our commitment to God and our gospel covenants
11:23
in all the ordianances, especially in the temple, we are endowed with power from on high!
11:24
when we enter into divine covenants, the Holy ghost is our companion, our guide
11:24
Moses 6:61
11:25
the Holy Ghost bears witness of your words and testifies… it puts into your heart what you should say.. you will not be confounded before men
11:25
divine covenants make strong Christians!
11:25
qualify for, and receive all ordinances that you can, and then live by those covenants
11:26
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has the priesthood authority to administer the covenants of the gospel of Jesus Christ
11:27
excellent talk on covenants, ordinances, and how they strengthen us through tough times
11:27
[Comment From Desi Escobedo]
A good teacher allows the Holy Ghost to use and flow through him or her in order to benefit the student.
11:28
Consider the Lilies of the Field… a favorite of President Monson
11:29
Consider the lilies of the field,
How they grow, how they grow.
Consider the birds in the sky,
How they fly, how they fly.

He clothes the lilies of the field.
He feeds the birds in the sky.
And He will feed those who trust Him,
And guide them with His eye.

Consider the sheep of His fold,
How they follow where He leads.
Though the path may wind across the mountains,
He knows the meadows where they feed.

He clothes the lilies of the field.
He feeds the birds in the sky,
And He will feed those who trust Him,
And guide them with His eye.

Consider the sweet, tender children
Who must suffer on this earth.
The pains of all of them He carried
From the day of His birth.

He clothes the lilies of the field,
He feeds the lambs in His fold,
And He will heal those who trust Him,
And make their hearts as gold.

11:29
absolutely beautiful song
11:32
I love it.
11:33
President Monson… we are grateful to the Tabernacle Choir for the beautiful music they have provided this morning… President Eyring will be the concluding speaker
11:33
extends to Elder Andersen a warm welcome… he has a witness that he is called of God
11:34
this is a great and sacred privilege to speak today
11:34
we have 1 challenge in common.. we must all deal with adversity
11:34
it is in the nature of our being human, that comfort gives way to distress… misfortunes arise
11:35
it seems unfair, and unjust
11:35
how could this happen?
11:36
those afflicted seem to be blameless sometimes, and can shake faith in God
11:36
doubt can grow
11:36
this can lead to loss of faith that there is a God at all
11:36
my purpose is to assure you that Heavenly Father and the Savior live, and they love all of humanity
11:37
God gave us the gift of mortality, so that we could be prepared to receive the greatest gift of God, eternal life..
11:38
we must be transformed through making righteous choices where that is hard to do.. testing experiences in mortality… we must be subject to trials while serving God
11:38
forgiveness can only come through the infinite Atonement of the Savior
11:39
the Lord knows how to heal and help us.. he comforts.. faith in that power will give us patience as we pray and wait for help
11:39
Christ learned by his own experience…
11:40
the prophet Joseph cried out in agony in a dungeon
11:42
we are being prepared for eternal life.. he will save his disciples.. they will find peace in their struggles
11:43
how are you so confident that you’ll be able to support your family? he’d done all he could that he would be worthy to have the Lord’s help
11:43
he was obedient, even when it was hard to do
11:44
we are blessed if we prepared while in prosperous times
11:46
“we’ve just come from the bishop’s office.. we are full tithe payers.”
11:46
the Lord always suits the relief to the person in need, to best teach them and purify them
11:47
[Comment From texasunnygirl]

11:54
I testify that the Savior lives.
11:54
he will give us strength to get through every trial… this is the Lord’s true church.
11:54
what a great talk!
11:56
I Know that My Redeemer Lives
11:56
I know that my Redeemer lives,
Triumphant Savior, Son of God,
Victorious over pain and death,
My King, my Leader, and my Lord.

He lives, my one sure rock of faith,
The one bright hope of men on earth,
The beacon to a better way,
The light beyond the veil of death.

Oh, give me thy sweet Spirit still,
The peace that comes alone from thee,
The faith to walk the lonely road
That leads to thine eternity.

1:39
we’re back, and ready for the afternoon session of General Conference, which starts at 2pm MDT
1:41
I watched the press conference online of Elder Andersen’s calling to the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles.
1:42
what a humble man! I have a witness that he truly is the man the Lord wanted to call to the sacred apostleship.
1:43
I’m watching a program currently on KSL TV, and strangely it is being broadcast in English and Spanish at the same time.. weird… anyone else experiencing this?
1:44
about 15 minutes till the afternoon session
1:45
it’s interesting to see how the twitter activity mirrored the session http://www.twitscoop.com/twits/search?q=ldsconf
1:46
seems like someone noticed that KSL was broadcasting in 2 languages at once… they just cut off the program and went to commercial.
1:50
now a short message about temples, temple building, and the Draper temple is being shown on KSL TV
1:51
I look forward to the messages that will be given this afternoon
1:54
any suggestions for the things I should liveblog? I try to capture main thoughts and ideas, as well as giving some overall commentary… I also like to provide the lyrics to the hymns that are being sung so we can follow along

“Come thy glorious day of promise”
2:03

1. Come, thou glorious day of promise;
Come and spread thy cheerful ray,
When the scattered sheep of Israel
Shall no longer go astray,
When hosannas,
When hosannas
With united voice they’ll cry.

2. Lord, how long wilt thou be angry?
Shall thy wrath forever burn?
Rise, redeem thine ancient people;
Their transgressions from them turn.
King of Israel,
King of Israel,
Come and set thy people free.

3. Oh, that soon thou wouldst to Jacob
Thy enliv’ning Spirit send!
Of their unbelief and misery
Make, O Lord, a speedy end.
Lord, Messiah!
Lord, Messiah!
Prince of Peace o’er Israel reign.

2:04
by the way, the morning session of Conference is already available for viewing on LDS.org
2:07
“Come oh thou King of Kings”
2:07

1. Come, O thou King of Kings!
We’ve waited long for thee,
With healing in thy wings,
To set thy people free.
Come, thou desire of nations, come;
Let Israel now be gathered home.

2. Come, make an end to sin,
And cleanse the earth by fire,
And righteousness bring in,
That Saints may tune the lyre
With songs of joy, a happier strain,
To welcome in thy peaceful reign.

3. Hosannas now shall sound
From all the ransomed throng,
And glory echo round
A new triumphal song;
The wide expanse of heaven fill
With anthems sweet from Zion’s hill.

4. Hail! Prince of life and peace!
Thrice welcome to thy throne!
While all the chosen race
Their Lord and Savior own,
The heathen nations bow the knee,
And ev’ry tongue sounds praise to thee.

The General Conference occurs in the Conference Center in Salt Lake City, Utah.
2:13
how grateful we are for living prophets of God!
2:14
Sunday School General Presidency was released
2:17
Young Men General Presidency was also released… and both their general boards
2:18
Oscarthorp as president of the Sunday School Presidency…. Beck as president of Young Men General Presidency
2:20
[Comment From Sylvia]
Is Bro Beck related to Sis Beck of Gen RS Pres?
2:20
does anyone remember Beck’s full name?
2:22
Auditing report
2:22
Statistical report
2:22
[Comment From Sylvia]
I think Davic is first or second name, not sure.
2:23
stakes 2818, missions 348, districts 622, wards&branches 21109, 13,508,509 membership, 123502 new children membership, 562593 convert baptisms, 4 temples dedicated
2:23
I hope those numbers were right.
2:23
I missed the number of missionaries.
2:24
Elder M. Russell Ballard will now speak.
2:24
we live in a fascinating and bewildering time.
2:24
“you’re going to text your Conference talk?!” lol
2:25
I have a message for that grandson, my grandchildren, and the youth of the Church
2:26
became an Edsel dealer… but it was a failure… his father warned him about doing that.
2:27
we must learn from others… internships example
2:27
rookies in sports
2:27
missionaries assigned to senior companions
2:28
sometimes we have to figure things out as we go along.. for example, figuring out modern technologies
2:29
for the most important questions of your eternal lives, there are answers in the scriptures and in the words and testimonies of apostles and prophets. even though they come from older men, it doesn’t mean they are less valuable. on the contrary, they are worth more.
2:29
those who forget the past, are condemned to repeat it.
2:29
those who do not remember the past are doomed to repeat it.
2:30
patterns repeat themselves among the Lorrd’s covenant people… this can be seen in the scriptures.
2:31
there are cycles of prosperity, pride, destruction, humility, and then repetition
2:32
our choices do result in spiritual consequences for ourself and our posterity
2:32
God’s desire to bless his children is manifest in the restoration of the gospel through the prophet Joseph Smith
2:33
the 179 years since the organization of the Church has been extraordinary… never has there been such remarkable progress in science and technology.. these facilitate the spread of the gospel.. but they also lead to the decline of morality.
2:34
certain factions of society are distrustful of anyone who chooses to live according to religious faith
2:34
their beliefs are publicly mocked
2:35
the cycle is repeating itself… again and again
2:35
what lessons of the past will have an affect on your choices right now?
2:35
the choice is yours
2:36
are you going to choose to remain faithful to the Lord’s commandments?
2:36
you don’t have to spend time as a Laman and a Lemuel to know that it is much better to be a Nephi
2:37
what a powerful talk!
2:38
the meaning and message of the scriptures and the past must be nourished in our hearts
2:38
it returns to your personal faith and testimony… as it always does
2:38
[Comment From Bobby]
Whos speaking again?
2:38
Elder M. Russell Ballard
2:39
how to gain a testimony? no new technology for that… you can’t do a Google search to gain a testimony.. you can’t text message faith.. you gain it the same way it has always been done.. it comes through desire, prayer, obedience, and service.
2:39
learn from the lessons of the past.
2:40
Elder Quentin L. Cook is now speaking.
2:40
of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles
2:40
objective – address stumbling blocks to faith, how the Father’s plan is big enough for all of his children
2:40
there is increased discussion of our faith and beliefs across the world… but this is not new
2:42
Charles Dickens was going to report on the immigration of the Saints to America.. quotes Dickens.. I was going to bear testimony against them.. but they did not deserve it.. after mingling with the converts they were described as “the pick and flower of England”
2:42
members find joy and satisfaction in the Church
2:42
but only when they live the teachings of the Church
2:44
atheism vs. belief in God
2:45
recent best-selling book about swans… The Black Swan?
2:46
events and things can be unexpected… beliefs such as there will not be prophets or revelation ever again, can be changed
2:47
about the conversion of his grandfather
2:49
Tennyson’s In Memoriam
2:49
the prevailing belief about damnation (hell) & salvation, verses what was revealed in the restoration
2:50
discussion about the different degrees of glory, spirit prison (hell), paradise
2:50
in my Father’s house there are many mansions
2:51
other churches do much good, bless mankind, and teach about Christ.. we should not criticize them
2:52
our leaders have consistently counseled to live in respect of others with different beliefs and faiths.
2:54
“Come, Come ye Saints”
2:55
great talk by Elder Cook
2:55
the choir and congregatoin will sing, “Let Us All Press On”
2:55

1. Let us all press on in the work of the Lord,
That when life is o’er we may gain a reward;
In the fight for right let us wield a sword,
The mighty sword of truth.

[Chorus]
Fear not, though the enemy deride;
Courage, for the Lord is on our side.
We will heed not what the wicked may say,
But the Lord alone we will obey.

[Chorus: Alto, Tenor, and Bass]
Fear not, courage, though the enemy deride;
We must be victorious, for the Lord is on our side.
We’ll not fear the wicked nor give heed to what they say,
But the Lord, our Heav’nly Father, him alone we will obey.

2. We will not retreat, though our numbers may be few
When compared with the opposite host in view;
But an unseen pow’r will aid me and you
In the glorious cause of truth.

3. If we do what’s right we have no need to fear,
For the Lord, our helper, will ever be near;
In the days of trial his Saints he will cheer,
And prosper the cause of truth.

2:58
Kevin W. Pearson of the Seventy
2:58
talking about faith in the Lord Jesus Christ
2:58
[Comment From Alison]
That was really fascinating talk from Elder Cook!
2:58
Yes it was!
2:59
we’ve been taught to teach our children to have faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.
2:59
faith is a principle of action and power.. it requires us to do
3:00
[Comment From J]
Elder Pearson is in the 1st Quorum of the Seventy
3:00
faith is built by obedience to the gospel of Jesus Christ
3:01
the greater obedience to God’s laws, the greater endowment of faith.. Elder McConkie
3:02
faith comes from a consistent behavior of obedience
3:03
faith as a principle of power
3:04
if thou canst belief, all things are possible to him that believeth
3:04
fear and faith cannot coexist
3:04
we must always build faith, and overcome sources of disbelief
3:05
is my own net faith positive or negative?
3:05
we get what we focus on consistently
3:05
the 6 destructive Ds..
3:06
1. doubt – it is not a principle of the gospel, and does not come from Christ.. it comes from a lack of confidence
3:06
2. discouragement – missed expectations.. weakened desire
3:06
3. distraction.. lack of focus… a tool of Satan.. but also bad habits
3:07
4. lack of diligence… not carrying through
3:07
5. disobedience… undermines the basis of faith
3:07
6. disbelief… to be past feeling
3:07
all of these erode and destroy our faith
3:08
“if ye will have faith in me ye shall have power to whatsoever thing is expedient in me.”
3:09
in a household of faith, there be no need for fear and doubt.. choose to live by faith
3:09
Rafael E. Pino of the Seventy will now speak
3:10
[Comment From Desi Escobedo]
T_T This is sad.
3:11
what a blessing it is to belong to the Church of Jesus Christ, and receive the ordinances and blessings of the temple
3:13
Job is mentioned again.. I think that’s the 3rd or 4th time this Conference
3:14
D&C 19
3:18
the winds blew, the rain came, the floods came against both houses… just because we are living the gospel does not mean that we will be free from adversity
3:18
Elder Richard G. Scott
3:18
temples!
3:19
will speak to you heart to heart.. without mincing words
3:19
when a temple is conveniently near by, small things may interrupt your plans to go.. set specific goals of when you can and will go to the temple.. and don’t allow anything to interfere with that plan
3:20
14 years ago decided to go to the temple at least once a week.. when travelling he has made up for missed visits.. he has kept that goal, and it’s changed his life.. he participates in all ordinances of the temple
3:20
avail yourself of all ordinances offered in the temple
3:21
what activity could have greater impact and provide greater joy than worshipping together as a couple in the temple
3:21
how to gain more benefit from temple attendance
3:21
understand the doctrine related to temple ordinances.. especially the Atonement
3:21
consider your relationship to Jesus Christ, and his relationship to Heavenly Father
3:21
always prayerfully express gratitude for the blessings that flow from temple ordinances
3:22
schedule regular visits to the temple.. leave time to stay within the walls.. remove distractions.. remove your watch when you enter the temple (I’ve actually done that very thing)
3:23
you must be sealed by the Holy Spirit of Promise, and both in the couple must want that sealing
3:24
a sealing with a spouse is required for exaltation in the kingdom of God
3:25
you need to do vicarious work.. identify ancestors.. the new FamilySearch program makes that much easier than before
3:25
what a joy it is to participate in the work of the temple
3:27
a story
3:27
special meaning the temple has for Elder Scott
3:27
14 years ago, the Lord took his wife
3:28
what can I learn from these difficulties?
3:28
children were born
3:29
[Comment From Robespierre]
Love the suggestion to leave your watch behind when you embark on temple work
3:30
I agree.. I’ve actually done that since I started going to the temple. I believe it helps me leave the world behind.
3:31
we should never complain when we are living worthily about what things happen in our lives
3:31
[Comment From Desi Escobedo]
Another sad story of a child dying. “Thank God for the trust He puts in us when He gives us the OPPORTUNITY to overcome adversity.”
3:32
I know I will have the privilege of living with my beautiful wife, and my children, because of the ordinances that are performed in the temple
3:32
what a blessing to have on the earth again the sealing authority
3:33
this is the work of the Lord. Jesus Christ lives. This is His Church. I am a witness of Him, and of His Atonement. I so testify with every capacity of which I possess.
3:33
excellent talk!!
3:34
Elder Russell M. Nelson will be the concluding speaker.
3:34
[Comment From Alison]
Beautiful sentiments.
3:34
[Comment From Tim Malone]
Lots of tears in our home during Elder Scott’s talk.
3:35
welcome to Elder Andersen to the quorum..
3:35
thank you President Monson for developing and using the power of knowing and doing the will of the Lord
3:35
Christ taught us how to pray
3:35
The Lord’s Prayer. Listen for lessons in His prayer.
3:37
clarifications of the Lord’s Prayer given in the Book of Mormon
3:37
forgiveness and temptation
3:37
4 versions of the Lord’s prayer.. opens with “Our Father”
3:38
“hallowed be thy name”
3:38
“thy will be done”
3:38
“daily bread” – spiritual nourishment also
3:39
[Comment From Robespierre ]
Sometimes I almost feel guilty benifiting from the adversity that some general authorities have endured to prepare them to serve us
3:39
amen = truly, or verily
3:39
avoid vain repetitions and pray after this manner
3:40
Intercessory Prayers
3:40
John 17
3:41
“I pray for them”
3:41
also in ancient America was an intercessory prayer
3:42
we too can pray for unity, that we can be of one heart and one mind with the Lord’s anointed
3:42
if we truly care for others, we should pray for them
3:42
the fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much
3:43
prayer unto the Father, “in my name”
3:43
we pray unto the Father “in the name of Jesus Christ”
3:44
prayers about the Holy Ghost
3:44
prayers can be enhanced… the song of the righteous is a prayer unto me… also by fasting..
3:45
a man may fast and pray until he kills himself, and there is no need for it! – Joseph F. Smith
3:45
The Lord will accept that which is enough… no need to overdo things
3:46
too much and unnecessary… closing prayers should not become unscheduled sermons!
3:46
Smile
3:46
use special pronouns in reference to diety… thee, thou, thy, thine instead of you, yours
3:47
when should we pray? whenever we want
3:48
[Comment From Desi Escobedo ]
The door of the heart has no handle on the outside. It can only be opened from the inside.
3:48
kneel with your family both morning and evening in family prayer
3:48
plead, thy will be done!
3:48
[Comment From Alison]
Obviously struck a chord re. the unscheduled sermons there!
3:50
may we apply these lessons from the Lord in prayer
3:50
Thank you Elder Nelson!
3:50
Sing We Now at Parting
3:50

1. Sing we now at parting
One more strain of praise.
To our Heav’nly Father
Sweetest songs we’ll raise.
For his loving kindness,
For his tender care,
Let our songs of gladness
Fill this Sabbath air.

2. Praise him for his mercy;
Praise him for his love.
For unnumbered blessings
Praise the Lord above.
Let our happy voices
Still the notes prolong.
One alone is worthy
Of our sweetest song.

3. Jesus, our Redeemer,
Now our praises hear.
While we bow before thee,
Lend a list’ning ear.
Save us, Lord, from error.
Watch us day by day.
Help us now to serve thee
In a pleasing way.

3:55
[Comment From Alison]
Which choir is this?
3:55
I’m not sure exactly.. Young Men/Young Women choir, but I’m not sure from where.
3:56
[Comment From Alison]
I thought maybe from the MTC…
3:56
[Comment From Desi Escobedo]
Prayer is the key to open the door to our heart so Christ can enter. “Behold, I stand at the door and knock.” Rev. 3:20

Wow- this is neat. how did you pull it all together?
9:51
Thanks JErb. Just a little HTML programming. Smile
9:52

9:54

“Sweet Hour of Prayer”
10:02

1. Sweet hour of prayer! Sweet hour of prayer!
That calls me from a world of care
And bids me at my Father’s throne
Make all my wants and wishes known.
In seasons of distress and grief,
My soul has often found relief
And oft escaped the tempter’s snare
By thy return, sweet hour of prayer!
And oft escaped the tempter’s snare
By thy return, sweet hour of prayer!

2. Sweet hour of prayer! Sweet hour of prayer!
Thy wings shall my petition bear
To him whose truth and faithfulness
Engage the waiting soul to bless.
And since he bids me seek his face,
Believe his word, and trust his grace,
I’ll cast on him my ev’ry care
And wait for thee, sweet hour of prayer!
I’ll cast on him my ev’ry care
And wait for thee, sweet hour of prayer!

10:05
this song is one of the first hymns that always comes to my mind.
10:09
“You Can Make the Pathway Bright”
10:10

1. You can make the pathway bright,
Fill the soul with heaven’s light,
If there’s sunshine in your heart;
Turning darkness into day,
As the shadows fly away,
If there’s sunshine in your heart today.

[Chorus]
If there’s sunshine in your heart,
You can send a shining ray
That will turn the night to day;
And your cares will all depart,
If there’s sunshine in your heart today.

2. You can speak the gentle word
To the heart with anger stirred,
If there’s sunshine in your heart;
Tho it seems a little thing,
It will heaven’s blessings bring,
If there’s sunshine in your heart today.

3. You can do a kindly deed
To your neighbor in his need,
If there’s sunshine in your heart;
And his burden you will share
As you lift his load of care,
If there’s sunshine in your heart today.

4. You can live a happy life
In this world of toil and strife,
If there’s sunshine in your heart;
And your soul will glow with love
From the perfect Light above,
If there’s sunshine in your heart today.

10:12
President Uchtdorf
10:12
he gave an absolutely excellent talk last night in Priesthood Session
10:12
begins speaking about Palm Sunday
10:13
rode in on a donkey… a multitude came out and carpeted the path with palm leaves, branches, and their garments
10:14
it is fitting that from Palm Sunday to Easter morning that we turn our thoughts to Jesus Christ
10:14
he gave us the gospel, a pearl beyond price
10:15
a life of happiness, peace, and fulfillment… it is the good news of Christ.. the Son of God came to earth, and atoned for our sins
10:15
God has a plan of redemption and happiness for his children
10:15
even during times of peril, sorrow, and uncertainty
10:15
another talk about overcoming adversity and these tough times
10:16
the flame of each new theory fades, to be replaced with a new solution.. they all fall short of the lasting change we seek in our lives
10:17
the gospel of Jesus Christ has the answers to all of our problems.. it is not a secret, it is not complicated or hidden, it unlocks the door to true happiness.. it is not a theory or proposition, it doesn’t come from man at all.. it comes from the Creator of the universe
10:18
the ultimate formula for happiness and success
10:20
how to keep your testimony ripe and strong?
10:21
we have to stay with it… this is a race of endurance.. we have to apply and reapply gospel principles.. make it part of our normal life
10:21
Alma 32 – the seed grows into a fruit bearing tree gradually as a result of our faith, patience, diligence, and long-suffering
10:22
we can’t receive the fullness of the blessings of the gospel if we neglect the tree.. we must nourish it
10:22
discipleship is a journey
10:23
it is not merely enough to speak of Jesus Christ.. discipleship is not a spectator sport.. we can’t stand inactive on the sidelines..
10:24
ours is not a second-hand religion
10:24
we can’t just observe the good that others do.. we must practice what we preach
10:25
let us be humble, let us pray to our Father in heaven.
10:25
have faith. seek and you will find.. knock and the door will be opened.. become an active participant in your ward or branch..
10:25
now is the time to have a temple recommend and use it
10:27
to those who have left the path of discipleship, I invite you to start where you are and come to the restored gospel of Jesus Christ
10:28
it is always the right time to start to walk in His way… it is NEVER too late
10:28
it is always the right time to walk in His way… it is NEVER too late
10:29
the gospel of Jesus Christ is taught in its fullness in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints
10:29
I bear solemn witness that Jesus the Christ lives
10:30
He is the way.
10:30
Pres. Uchtdorf always gives great talks!
10:30
Elder Neil L. Andersen… newest apostle in the Quorum of the Twelve
10:31
I do know with perfect and certain clarity that Jesus is the Christ, the beloved Son of God
10:31
I love you President Monson
10:32
The Lord will shape the back which has a burden placed upon it
10:36
I have stood with them in moments too sacred to recount. I testify that they are the Lord’s anointed.
10:36
I have witnessed the prophetic voice
10:37
a great gathering will take place… Isaiah prophesied of this time
10:37
we will not be many in number, but we will be in every land and nation
10:38
purposes of the restoration, be a light for the world

10:40
there is much we can learn from the good people all around us
10:40
singular in the Church of Jesus Christ… only here is the priesthood.. only here is the Book of Mormon.. only here are there prophets of God who have the keys..
10:41
“This is my Church, and I will establish it.”
10:42
He lives, he is resurrected, he guides his holy work upon the earth, his prophet is President Thomas S. Monson
10:42
powerful talk! he is an apostle of the Lord.
10:44
Elder Steven E. Snow of the Seventy
10:44
changes are inevitable in our lives
10:44
how can we prepare for change?
10:45
1. Follow the prophets.. listen and abide by their counsel. they raise a voice of wanring, but also provide steady and pragmatic counsel
10:45
whether by my own voice, or the voice of my servants, it is the same
10:45
2. Keep an eternal perspective.. change and challenges are part of God’s plan. this is a time of testing, to see if we will do all things whatsoever the Lord God will command us
10:46
there must needs be an opposition in all things
10:46
3. Have faith! Move forward with faith.
10:47
faith and doubt cannot exist in the same mind at the same time, for one will dispel the other
10:47
without faith there cannot be any hope
10:47
4. Be of good cheer! we face many challenges today.
10:48
the next time you are tempted to groan, you might try laughing instead.
10:48
what about changes that are thrust upon us without our control?
10:49
how do we deal with these? the answer is the same. By listening to the prophets, keeping an eternal perspective, having faith, and being of good cheer.
10:49
story of Robert Gardner Jr.
10:53
may we be obedient, faithful, and cheerful
10:53
President Monson.. a descendant of Br. Gardner came to his mission in Canada
10:54
“Redeemer of Israel”
10:54

1. Redeemer of Israel,
Our only delight,
On whom for a blessing we call,
Our shadow by day
And our pillar by night,
Our King, our Deliv’rer, our all!

2. We know he is coming
To gather his sheep
And lead them to Zion in love,
For why in the valley
Of death should they weep
Or in the lone wilderness rove?

3. How long we have wandered
As strangers in sin
And cried in the desert for thee!
Our foes have rejoiced
When our sorrows they’ve seen,
But Israel will shortly be free.

4. As children of Zion,
Good tidings for us.
The tokens already appear.
Fear not, and be just,
For the kingdom is ours.
The hour of redemption is near.

5. Restore, my dear Savior,
The light of thy face;
Thy soul-cheering comfort impart;
And let the sweet longing
For thy holy place
Bring hope to my desolate heart.

6. He looks! and ten thousands
Of angels rejoice,
And myriads wait for his word;
He speaks! and eternity,
Filled with his voice,
Re-echoes the praise of the Lord.

10:57
Barbara Thompson – Second counselor in Relief Society General Presidency
10:58
be fixed in your purpose, for Satan will try you
10:59
3 things in our goal to obtain eternal life. 1. increase in faith and personal righteousness. 2. strengthen our families and homes. 3. seek out to serve the poor and needy
11:00
making and keeping sacred temple covenants will keep us on the path to eternal life.
11:03
scriptures, FHE, and family prayer will strengthen families
11:04
are we not all beggars?
11:06
we must be fixed in our purpose, as we seek to increase in faith and righteousness, strengthen our families and homes, and seek to serve the poor and needy
11:07
Elder Jeffrey R. Holland
11:07
my message today is intended for everyone, but it is directed in a special way to those who are alone, or feel alone, or feel abandoned… might include those who long to be married, those who have lost a spouse, or who have lost or never been blessed with children.
11:08
it can include all of us at various times in our lives
11:09
I have trodden the wine press alone… I looked and there was none to help…
11:09
Palm Sunday reference again..
11:10
Pontius Pilot’s experience with Christ
11:11
one godless Barabus was sent free, while the Son of God was sent to the cross
11:12
it’s wrentching to think that one of Christ’s special witnesses betrayed him and all that he was for 30 pieces of silver… never in the history in this world has so little money purchased so much infamy
11:13
Judas Iscariot
11:13
Christ’s sweat came as great drops of blood
11:13
could ye not watch with me one hour?
11:14
sleep on now, and take on your rest.
11:16
[Comment From J]
Hal Gardner was my wife’s Mission President in Calgary
11:16
[Comment From Desi Escobedo]
Is this the pattern of 2009? “Prepare for change”.
11:16
[Comment From Desi Escobedo]
Have you got the words to the hymn just sung?
11:16
[Comment From Desi Escobedo]
OK, another disaster talk. Me scared now.
11:16
sorry, I missed your comments earlier
11:17
My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?
11:18
he did please his Father perfectly
11:20
how can we learn from Christ’s experience in our own times of feeling lonely and abandoned?
11:20
[Comment From Desi Escobedo]
Now I understand why Jesus was left alone without hope for that time. To experience what we mere mortals so often feel.
11:21
this is a great talk.
11:22
we don’t have to EVER feel alone.
11:22
we will never be left alone or unaided, even if sometimes we feel like we are.
11:22
I will not leave you comfortless
11:24
may we declare that we are more fully disciples of Jesus Christ!
11:25
may we stand by Jesus Christ, at all times, in all things, and in all places that we may be in until death, for surely that is how he stood by us
11:25
there is power in the witness of the Lord’s apostles
11:25
pure power
11:28
“This is My Beloved Son”
11:28

1. Jesus entered Jordan’s waters
When His work had just begun.
God the Father spoke from heaven:
“This is My Beloved Son. Hear Him!”

2. Nephites gazing into heaven
Saw their white-robed Savior come.
And they heard the Father witness:
“This is My Beloved Son. Hear Him!”

3. Joseph saw two glorious beings
Shining brighter than the sun.
God again presented Jesus:
“This is My Beloved Son. Hear Him!”

4. As I read the scriptures daily—
Words of Christ, the Holy One—
In my heart I’ll hear God tell me:
“This is My Beloved Son. Hear Him!”

11:28
[Comment From Tim Malone]
He is not the first to have taught that doctrine, but I don’t think I have ever heard it taught more powerfully!
11:28
[Comment From Bobby]
I know seriously!
11:29
President Monson will now address us
11:29
[Comment From Guest]
Elder Holland always gives really powerful talks. :) amazing
11:30
circumstances in the world are not how we would wish
11:30
the financial outlook is grim.. the moral footings continue to slip
11:30
those who try to safeguard those footings are often ridiculed
11:30
it can become easy to become fearful and cynical about the future
11:31
I’d like us to turn our thoughts and attitudes from that which is around us to our membership in the Church
11:31
we’re here to learn and grow from difficult times in our lives.
11:32
wherefore, be of good cheer, and do not fear, for I the Lord am with you and will stand by you
11:33
it won’t remove our troubles from us, but to be able to meet our challenges and be victorious
11:33
our faith in the gospel and in the Savior has given us the strength we need
11:33
3 examples
11:33
1 – paternal great grandparents from Scotland
11:34
they heard the call to gather to Zion
11:34
8 weeks of travel across the ocean
11:36
lost their child at sea.
11:36
but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world
11:37
2 – faithfilled man… epitomized peace and joy the gospel brings into life…
11:37
[Comment From Desi Escobedo]
3rd talk detailing story of a child’s death.
11:38
when he brought his life into conformity with the teachings of the Church, he felt peace and joy
11:39
I will be eternally grateful for the truthfulness of the gospel…
11:40
I am the light of the world, he that follows me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life
11:41
3rd example
11:45
the death of multiple children.
11:47
she dug a grave in the frozen earth with her bare fingers to bury her last child.
11:48
something within her said, “Get down upon your knees, and pray!”
11:48
[Comment From Guest]
it’s hard to take notes on Pres. Monson’s talks because of the stories that are hard to summarize quickly
11:48
it’s true
11:49
President Monson is weeping.
11:51
I testify to you that our promised blessings are beyond measure!
11:51
there will be nothing in this world that can defeat us… fear not, be of good cheer… the future is as bright as your faith!
11:52
wow
11:52
“We Thank Thee Oh God for a Prophet”
11:52

1. We thank thee, O God, for a prophet
To guide us in these latter days.
We thank thee for sending the gospel
To lighten our minds with its rays.
We thank thee for every blessing
Bestowed by thy bounteous hand.
We feel it a pleasure to serve thee
And love to obey thy command.

2. When dark clouds of trouble hang o’er us
And threaten our peace to destroy,
There is hope smiling brightly before us,
And we know that deliv’rance is nigh.
We doubt not the Lord nor his goodness.
We’ve proved him in days that are past.
The wicked who fight against Zion
Will surely be smitten at last.

3. We’ll sing of his goodness and mercy.
We’ll praise him by day and by night,
Rejoice in his glorious gospel,
And bask in its life-giving light.
Thus on to eternal perfection
The honest and faithful will go,
While they who reject this glad message
Shall never such happiness know.

11:54
[Comment From Tim Malone]
Rarely have I seen President Monson shed tears. How the spirit worked on him!
11:55
We thank thee, oh God, for a prophet, to guide us in these latter days!!
11:55
and love to obey thy command
11:56
[Comment From Bobby]
how many BYU professors are in the choir?!?
11:56
probably several.
11:58
[Comment From Sylvia]
I learned we can endure tremendous difficult circumstances with enough faith in the Saviour. Awe some session
11:58
That was a very powerful session.
11:58
Thank you to all that participated with me.
11:59
[Comment From S]
Thank you!
12:01
[Comment From symphonyofdissent]
I am very impressed by the power of the talks during conference this weekend!
12:01
[Comment From Tim Malone]
Thanks for your commentary. See you this afternoon.
12:02
FYI.. KSL-TV is broadcasting a program about the Draper temple
12:03
[Comment From Alison]
Bryce, thanks once again!
12:03
You’re welcome! We’ll be back at 2:00pm MDT
12:04 [Standby]  We’ll be back for afternoon session of General Conference at 2:00 MDT.
1:58
alright, we’re back for the afternoon session!
2:00
everyone ready?
2:00
the video feed on the left is about 2 minutes behind the TV broadcast
2:01
President Eyring will be conducting this session.
2:01
[Comment From Tim Malone]
Which apostles have we not heard yet – Elders Nelson, Ballard, Oaks, Perry?
2:01
I think we’ve already heard from Elder Nelson… but the others are right, I think.
2:02
I think we might have already heard from Ballard too… we haven’t heard from Bednar yet.
2:03
“Now we’ll sing with one accord”
2:03

1. Now we’ll sing with one accord,
For a prophet of the Lord,
Bringing forth his precious word,
Cheers the Saints as anciently.
When the world in darkness lay,
Lo! he sought the better way,
And he heard the Savior say,
“Go and prune my vineyard, son!”

2. And an angel surely then,
For a blessing unto men,
Brought the priesthood back again
In its ancient purity.
Even Joseph he inspired;
Yea, his heart he truly fired
With the light that he desired
For the work of righteousness.

3. And the Book of Mormon true,
With its cov’nant ever new,
For the Gentile and the Jew,
He translated sacredly.
God’s commandments to mankind,
For believing Saints designed,
And to bless the seeking mind,
Came to him from Jesus Christ.

4. Precious are the years to come,
While the righteous gather home
For the great millennium,
When they’ll rest in blessedness.
Prudent in this world of woes,
They will triumph o’er their foes,
While the realm of Zion grows
Purer for eternity.

2:08
“O My Father” by the choir
2:08

1. O my Father, thou that dwellest
In the high and glorious place,
When shall I regain thy presence
And again behold thy face?
In thy holy habitation,
Did my spirit once reside?
In my first primeval childhood
Was I nurtured near thy side?

2. For a wise and glorious purpose
Thou hast placed me here on earth
And withheld the recollection
Of my former friends and birth;
Yet ofttimes a secret something
Whispered, “You’re a stranger here,”
And I felt that I had wandered
From a more exalted sphere.

3. I had learned to call thee Father,
Thru thy Spirit from on high,
But, until the key of knowledge
Was restored, I knew not why.
In the heav’ns are parents single?
No, the thought makes reason stare!
Truth is reason; truth eternal
Tells me I’ve a mother there.

4. When I leave this frail existence,
When I lay this mortal by,
Father, Mother, may I meet you
In your royal courts on high?
Then, at length, when I’ve completed
All you sent me forth to do,
With your mutual approbation
Let me come and dwell with you.

2:13
this is a beautiful arrangement of this song… beautiful
2:15
Elder Dallin H. Oaks (and then Elder Bednar)
2:15
Our Savior gave himself in unselfish service… we should follow him and deny ourselves of selfish interests in the service of others
2:16
LDS are unique in following that teaching… in service
2:16
tens of thousands submit papers to full-time missionary service
2:17
temple work has no other motive than service for the living and the dead
2:17
it’s not easy to give up our personal priorities and desires
2:17
“forget yourself and go to work” – Pres. Hinckley’s father to him on his mission
2:18
he who lives only unto himself, withers and dies, while he who forgets himself in the service to others grows and blossoms in eternity
2:18
we should emulate the service of the Savior.. we won’t be asked how many positions did we hold, but how many people did we help?
2:19
the sacrifice parents give for their children
2:19
a dog instead of children?
2:20
none of this service asks what’s in it for me
2:20
LDS are uniquely committed to sacrifice
2:21
Mormons Helping Hands
2:21
uniting in defending marriage
2:23
some LDS seem to forgo service to others, and set their standard with that of the world
2:23
we should be precious and unique.. the salt of the earth
2:24
we do not serve the Master well if we seek the honor of men more than that of God
2:24
we can’t follow trendy actions
2:25
C.S. Lewis quote
2:26
a selfish person is more interested in pleasing man, especially himself, than in pleasing God
2:27
sacrifice is out of fashion today
2:27
“the me” generation.. a selfish time.. what’s in it for me?
2:27
we want to get something for nothing… greed… entitlement (Elder Hales talked about this too)
2:28
entitlement is selfish.. it demands much, and gives little
2:28
the effects of greed is evident in the multimillion dollar bonuses of corporate executives… but also evident in the borrowing and consumerism in the financial crisis around the world
2:29
getting something for nothing is contrary to the gospel law of the harvest
2:29
the values of the world teach that it’s all about me… it is contrary to eternal progress
2:30
Mother Teresa
2:30
her life of unselfish service is an inspiration to all the world
2:30
that is what the Lord called losing our lives in service to others
2:31
changing our attitude about going to church… no longer go to church for my sake, but to think of others… be active, not passive, and making a positive difference in people’s lives.
2:32
act and serve for what we give, not what we get
2:32
Elder Bednar
2:33
being an effective stake president? I wish I had been a temple worker before I was a stake president.
2:34
I believe I was a good stake president… but serving in the temple has expanded my vision… worthiness to receive and keep temple covenants should be the center of all we do
2:34
eternal importance of temple covenants
2:34
be worthy of and use a temple recommend
2:34
the blessings of the temple!
2:35
in all ages the divine purposes of the people of God has been to build temples
2:35
Alma 26:5
2:35
the sheaves are newly baptized members of the church, the garners are the holy temples
2:35
Elder Maxwell quote.. when we baptize, our gaze should be towards the temple
2:36
Alma 26:6
2:36
the sheaves will be gathered together in their place, that the storm cannot penetrate to them
2:37
Elder Oaks… in renewing our covenants in partaking of the sacrament.. we witness that we are willing to take upon us the name of Jesus Christ.. something else must happen such that we actually take upon us the name of Christ in the most complete sense
2:37
temples are houses built unto my name
2:38
Dedication of the Kirtland Temple – go forth from this house, and that thy name may be upon them.. upon whom thy name shall be put in this house… I have accepted this house, and my name shall be here
2:38
the process of taking upon us the name of Christ, that commences in baptism, is fulfilled in the temple
2:38
in the ordinances of the temple we more completely and fully take upon us the name of Jesus Christ
2:39
the adversary is mindful of the increasing number of temples
2:39
dedications are opposed by others
2:40
we never begin to build a temple without hearing the bells of hell ringing
2:40
D&C 10:43
2:40
I will not suffer that mine enemies shall destroy my work
2:42
what have you learned as a temple president? I have come to better understand the protection available through our temple covenants.. and what it means to make an acceptable offering in temple attendance… there is a difference in temple attendance among members
2:42
the protecting power of the ordinances
2:42
“no weapon formed against them shall prosper” “no combination of wickedness will be able to rise up and prevail against the people”
2:43
“if they will smite this people, thou wilt smite them”
2:43
study repeatedly and ponder prayerfully the implications of these scriptures
2:44
the devil despises the purity in the Lord’s house!
2:45
“now is the time for labor.. let the fire of the covenant which you made in the house of the Lord burn in your hearts like flame unquenchable” – Brigham Young
2:45
what is it that gave those early Saints such strength? it was the temple covenants they made
2:45
our God will never us forsake
2:45
the temples are a refuge from the storm
2:46
D&C 101:65
2:46
young people – be worthy and steadfast and look forward to the day you’ll receive the ordinances and blessings of the temple
2:46
make the spiritual preparations to receive the blessings only available in the temple
2:47
those that have received the ordinances, but have not returned in quite some time… repent, prepare, and worship again in the temple
2:48
I bear solemn witness that the fire of the covenant will burn in the heart of every faithful member of the Church who will worship and hold a standing in the Lord’s holy house.
2:48
amen!
2:48
Gary E. Stevenson of the Seventy
2:49
Logan temple
2:50
“look,Grandpa, you are never lost when you can see the temple!”
2:50
the temple will provide direction for yourself and your family in a world of chaos
2:50
King Benjamin directed the Saints to the temple
2:51
we need to turn the doors of our homes towards the temple too
2:51
we should replace some leisure activities with temple attendance
2:51
as we touch the temple, the temple will touch us
2:51
146 temples have been dedicated or announced
2:52
“It is the most holy of any place of worship on earth.. only the home can compare with the temple in sacredness.”
2:52
we can make our homes a house of the Lord
2:53
take a virtual tour of your home… is it a place of peace, love, and a refuge from the world?.. is it clean? can you see images of the Savior?
2:54
hopefully we don’t need an extreme home makeover!
2:54
we should have standards within our homes
2:55
there is a righteous unity between the temple and the home
2:55
in the ordinances of the temple the foundations of the family are sealed in place
2:56
“say the word temple… say it quietly and reverently.. say it over and over again.. add the word holy.. holy temple.. say it as if it was capitalized.. Temple.. put the words holy temple and home together and you have described the house of the Lord”
2:57
I love to see “temple” trending on Twitter http://www.twitscoop.com/twits/search?q=temple
2:58
you are never lost when you can see the temple
2:59
“Guide Us O Thou Great Jehovah”
3:00

1. Guide us, O thou great Jehovah,
Guide us to the promised land.
We are weak, but thou art able;
Hold us with thy pow’rful hand.
Holy Spirit, Holy Spirit,
Feed us till the Savior comes, [Alto and Tenor: Savior comes.]
Feed us till the Savior comes.

2. Open, Jesus, Zion’s fountains;
Let her richest blessings come.
Let the fiery, cloudy pillar
Guard us to this holy home.
Great Redeemer, Great Redeemer,
Bring, oh, bring the welcome day, [Alto and Tenor: welcome day!]
Bring, oh, bring the welcome day!

3. When the earth begins to tremble,
Bid our fearful thoughts be still;
When thy judgments spread destruction,
Keep us safe on Zion’s hill,
Singing praises, Singing praises,
Songs of glory unto thee, [Alto and Tenor: unto thee,]
Songs of glory unto thee.

3:02
We’ve had 3 talks about the temple now.. Elder Scott, Elder Bednar, and Elder Stevenson… any others?
3:02
Jose A. Teixeira of the Seventy
3:03
God’s work.. to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man
3:04
the ability and power to choose
3:04
our Heavenly Father will never force us to do what’s right
3:05
Moroni 7:13 – that which inviteth and enticeth to do good is from God
3:06
GPS devices example
3:08
we have a GPS device… we are born with the light of Christ which is given to all mankind… we are also given the gift of the Holy Ghost when we become members of the Church
3:10
surely the Lord God will do nothing, but he revealeth his secrets unto his servants the prophets Amos 3:7
3:11
we’ve been taught this weekend from prophets, seers, and revelators
3:12
as we abide by the teachings we have received, we will reach our eternal home
3:12
F. Michael Watson of the Seventy
3:14
whoso treasureth up my word shall not be deceived
3:15
“whether by my own voice, or by the voice of my servants, it is the same”
3:15
that is at least the second time we’ve heard that scripture this Conference.
3:16
the counsel given by prophets of God
3:17
You may not like what comes from the authority of the Church.. it may contradict your political views.. but if we listen to these things, as if from the mouth of the Lord Himself, the Lord God will disperse the powers of darkness from before you.. – Harold B. Lee
3:17
do you believe these prophets knew what they were talking about?
3:18
this is a timely message today for the Saints
3:19
every morning meeting, the Brethren take turns praying
3:20

3:26
a member-oriented program is the key to success in missionary work
3:27
it becometh every man who has been warned, to warn his neighbor
3:29
most of the time is wasted in missionary work in trying to find people rathe than teaching them… members should find the people, so the missionaries can teach them
3:31
we must open our mouths and testify
3:31
D&C 88:81
3:32
missionary work is the responsibility of each of us
3:33
we should declare our belief in Jesus Christ and His Atonement
3:33
we should tell in our own words the story of the First Vision
3:34
let us testify of the Book of Mormon
3:37
we need to be shepherds
3:37
be a member-missionary.. D&C 18
3:39
[Comment From Robespierre]
To me it seems like the church could use a lot more sister missionaries because there are so many single female investigators elders have trouble teaching.
3:39
President Monson will be our concluding speaker, our beloved prophet.
3:40
my heart is full and my feelings tender
3:40
we’re all more determined to live the principles of the gospel of Jesus Christ
3:41
for my soul delighteth in the song of the heart, and the song of the righteous is a prayer unto me
3:41
may we long remember the messages we’ve been given in this Conference.. the messages will be printed in next month’s Ensign… read them, study them, and apply them in your life
3:42

3:42
new presidencies in the Young Men and Sunday School General Presidencies
3:42
let us pray always, lest we enter into temptation
3:43
pray for our children
3:43
a word of caution to all
3:43
we live at a time when the adversary is using every means possible to ensnare us in his web of deceit.
3:44
advances in many areas that can be used for good can speed us along that pathway.
3:44
the internet.
3:44
it can provide limitless opportunities for information.. for communication.. the Church’s website… on the other hand, there is much evil.. pornography
3:45
involvement in such will destroy the Spirit… be strong, be clean, avoid such degrading and destructive content at all costs! I sound this warning to everyone, everywhere!
3:45
if you are involved in this behavior… cease now!
3:46
choose you this day whom ye will serve.
3:46
we have built temples throughout the world.. for you who are worthy.. GO OFTEN.
3:46
what a privilege it is to go to the temple
3:48

3:48
we have the sure knowledge that God lives, and that Jesus is the Christ. (think about that)

I love you, I pray for you

“God Be With You Till We Meet Again”
3:50

1. God be with you till we meet again;
By his counsels guide, uphold you;
With his sheep securely fold you.
God be with you till we meet again.

[Chorus]
Till we meet, till we meet,
Till we meet at Jesus’ feet,
Till we meet, till we meet,
God be with you till we meet again.

2. God be with you till we meet again;
When life’s perils thick confound you,
Put his arms unfailing round you.
God be with you till we meet again.

3. God be with you till we meet again;
Keep love’s banner floating o’er you;
Smite death’s threat’ning wave before you.
God be with you till we meet again.
